:: New Video!

(Submitted by Tais)

This week’s update was a very impressive video, hopefully dispelling most (if not all) rumours that Darkfall is vaporware. If you have not seen it yet, stop reading this immediately and quickly head on over to this thread on the official Darkfall forums.

Impressive, isn’t it?

The graphics are much better than most people would have hoped for, and we even got about 9 seconds of the Mirdain treetops. (Do we count the waterfall in what could be a mirdain forest?) The alfar are all drooling at the sight of their racial mount and the human towns look stunning, especially around the 40 second mark, with a human castle in the distance on the top of a mountain.

I won’t spoil any more of the video for you, except to say that it appears that this might be the first of a series. I eagerly await the next update from the Darkfall development team!

:: Darkfall Warcry Dev Journal #18

(Submitted by Tais)

The 24th of November saw the 18th Darkfall Dev Journal released to us, packed with all sorts of goodies. There is talk of the Economy (proof that the DF lads do read the forums) and how the Darkfall Team plan to keep this in check and how they expect warfare to be the driving force behind it all… no surprise there.

There was even a little bit of talk of what information players will be able to find out about regarding weapons and armour. It was not the most exciting information on game mechanics, but it was at least something.

Other than the above there are somethings clarified, people will be much happier with the radar than they were, prestige classes might not make it for beta launch (no loss.. let me in beta!) and other tidbits of news.

One of the better updates for sure.

Enjoy!

:: Darkfall Warcry Dev Journal #7: The Elves

Today saw the release of the latest Darkfall Warcry Dev Journal, which dealt specifically with our beloved Mirdain. We’re especially excited to see pictures of Mirdain in action, along with the mysterious (and controversial) Aerdin Cats.

The information in the article wasn’t terribly novel; we’d seen most of it before on the Darkfall website. Still, there were some bits that were completely new:

Trouble also brews in the heart of the forest, where a circle of fundamentalist mirdain druids called the Forest Prophets have taken up arms against the Republic. In their desperate quest to return the Mirendil to its pristine, pre-civilization state, the Forest Prophets have resorted to casting terrible spells on the animals which they originally set out to protect, turning them into curse-crazed monsters which are sent to rampage through mirdain communities.

We haven’t seen any word on whether these “Forest Prophets” are the same thing as the “Ciel Fey,” the anti-progress, anti-Mirdain-republic religious zealots who will also, apparently, be killing us on sight. I’m curious to see just how hostile a place Mirendil turns out to be for the Mirdain, between the Oaklords, the Forest Prophets, and their minions.

:: IGN RPGVault - Darkfall Peek #29

The latest update from Tasos is one of the best yet. Besides containing some very intriguing information about in-game tools…

There are clan management tools to satisfy even the most demanding control freak while simultaneously allowing leaders to delegate authority without losing their peace of mind. Our goal for these tools is that you won’t need anything further to run a successful clan other than what we offer you in-game. There is an in-game clan site, announcements and alerts, message boards, recruiting tools, statistical records, management system, diplomacy interface, etc. Clan tools will be constantly updated and upgraded based on feedback from the clans themselves.

We also get a very hopeful piece of concept art containing a Mirdain female (she’s the one on the left).

Claus promised us “hot elf chicks,” and that concept art is a lot closer to delivering on that idea than, say, this.

:: IGN RPGVault - Darkfall Peek #26

The latest RPGVault Darkfall Peek is entirely concerned with the issue of trade. There is not a great deal of new information in the article, but it does serve as further reassurance that Aventurine have the Right Idea.

On neat detail that isn’t mentioned in the article, but is visible one of the screenshots, is structural decay (or destruction; we don’t know the details). Note the caved-in roof of the building behind the rider:

:: Darkfall Warcry Weekly "Update" #7

Today’s War Cry update provides us with three new entries for the still-nascent Darkfall Bestiary: zombies, zombie warriors, and dire zombies. (Yes, I realize that zombies aren’t beasts. I’m open to suggestions for terms other than “bestiary.”)

It’s not the ultimate Mirdain exposé we might have hoped for – zombies are arguably the most abhorrent creatures imaginable to the Mirdain ethos – but there are some interesting bits nevertheless.

:: IGN RPGVault - Darkfall Peek #24

Well, Tasos told us that the features on IGN really weren’t about divulging new information for the veterans of the community, and the latest peak certainly bears that out.

That said, it is reassuring to be reminded that the developers’ hearts are in the right place:

As players, we enjoyed playing skill-based games like Ultima Online and The Elder Scrolls series, and we couldn’t help feeling restricted by class / level-based ones. When faced with the decision of allowing players the freedom to take the skills they want and need as their character grows and the game evolves – or not – it was a no-brainer.

:: Darkfall Warcry Weekly "Interview" #6

The reason for the quotes is that this interview is not an interview at all. Instead they have released the map of Agon! If you are having problems check it out on the Warcry page you can check it out in our gallery by clicking here

:: IGN RPGVault - Darkfall Peek #23

Another RPGVault Darkfall peek, and the news is a little more heartening than our recent Darkfall Warcry Interview.

More about mounts:

Mounts can be stored safely after use, but they can be taken over if left unattended, or when the rider is killed. Mounts will take damage, slowly regenerate their health, and they can also be killed. There are running and walking mode, and they can also jump and swim. Armored mounts and a taming skill are features under consideration.

More importantly, more about mounted combat:

Mounts can be used for transportation of players, transportation of goods, strategic and tactical mobility, as cover, and of course, for combat. Cavalry and mounted units can be used for reconnaissance and scouting, in shock force tactics, frontal assaults and charges, flanking maneuvers, pursuit of scattered and fleeing enemies, in raiding and hit and run tactics, breaking through or going over enemy lines and formations – and much more.

Today’s Darkfall Peek is definitely worth a read.

:: Darkfall Warcry Weekly Interview #5

Another Friday, another interview from Warcry. Unfortunately, this interview has almost entirely to do with what’s not in the game, such as player-run farms:

Farms aren’t implemented and may not be before launch. As things stand, you can buy reagents from NPC merchants, find them using herbalism, hunting, mining, woodcutting, fishing, etc. Some can be created using various tradeskills.

Still, even if the update is basically just disappointing news, it’s great that the developers are starting to communicate regularly with their future player base.
